About Deck Stain Calculator

The Deck Stain Calculator estimates how many gallons of stain you need to finish a deck — including the floor boards, railings, and stairs — and tells you how many cans to buy, the leftover amount, and the estimated cost. Unlike a plain area calculator, it adjusts the coverage rate for your stain type, the wood surface, and the number of coats, so the estimate matches what actually happens on the wood.

How Much Stain Does a Deck Need?

As a rule of thumb, one US gallon of deck stain covers about 200 to 350 square feet per coat. Thinner, transparent products spread toward the high end; opaque solid stains and thirsty, rough or weathered wood pull toward the low end. To estimate a whole deck, add up every surface you plan to stain, then divide by the coverage rate for your product and multiply for extra coats.

Deck Stain Formula

Step 1 — Total Surface Area
$$\text{Area} = (\text{Length} \times \text{Width}) + (\text{Railing} \times 4) + (\text{Stairs} \times \text{Width} \times 1.8)$$
Step 2 — Gallons Needed
$$\text{Gallons} = \frac{\text{Area}}{\text{Coverage}} + \frac{\text{Area} \times (\text{Coats} - 1)}{\text{Coverage} \times 1.6}$$

Railing surface is estimated at about 4 square feet per linear foot (top rail, bottom rail, posts and balusters on both faces of a typical 36-inch railing). Each stair adds roughly 1.8 square feet per foot of width for the tread and riser. Coats after the first divide by a larger coverage number because sealed wood absorbs far less stain.

Stain Coverage by Type

Stain TypeCoverage (smooth wood)Best For
Transparent / Clear Sealer~350 sq ft/galNew wood, showing full grain
Semi-Transparent~250 sq ft/galBalance of protection and grain
Semi-Solid~200 sq ft/galAging wood, more color
Solid / Opaque~225 sq ft/galWeathered or mismatched boards

These are first-coat rates on smooth, planed lumber. Multiply the required stain by roughly 1.25 for weathered gray wood and about 1.45 for rough-sawn or heavily textured boards, since porous surfaces drink up more product.

What Affects How Much Stain You Use?

🎨 Stain Opacity

Clear sealers spread furthest; solid stains carry more pigment and cover a bit less area per gallon.

🪚 Wood Texture

Rough-sawn and weathered boards are porous and absorb far more stain than smooth new lumber.

🖌️ Number of Coats

The first coat soaks in the most. Later coats spread about 60% further on the now-sealed surface.

🚧 Railings & Balusters

Spindles have a lot of hidden surface area for their footprint — never forget to include them.

🪜 Stairs

Treads, risers and stringers add up quickly. Each step is stained on several faces.

🌡️ Application

Brushing works stain into the grain and uses a little more than spraying or rolling.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Measure the deck floor: Enter the length and width in feet or metres.
  2. Add railings and stairs: Enter the total linear length of railing and the number of stairs so their surfaces are counted.
  3. Choose the stain and wood: Pick the stain type, the wood surface condition, and how many coats you plan to apply.
  4. Add a price (optional): Enter the price per gallon to see the estimated project cost.
  5. Calculate: Read the gallons needed, how many cans to buy, the leftover, and a full step-by-step breakdown.

Tips for Staining a Deck

  • Stain when it is dry and mild. Aim for 50–90°F with no rain for 24–48 hours and avoid direct hot sun, which makes stain dry too fast.
  • Clean and let it dry first. Wash off dirt and mildew, and let new or washed wood dry for a day or two so it accepts the stain evenly.
  • Do a test board. Stains look different on your wood than on the can — test the color and see how thirsty the boards are.
  • Keep a wet edge. Work a few boards at a time along their full length to avoid lap marks.
  • Buy a little extra. Rounding up to a full can gives you reserve for touch-ups and unusually absorbent boards.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much stain do I need for a deck?

Most decks use one gallon of stain for every 200 to 350 square feet per coat, depending on the stain type and how porous the wood is. Measure the floor, add the railing and stair surfaces, then divide the total area by the coverage rate. For a typical 320 square foot deck with railings, plan on roughly 2 to 3 gallons for two coats.

How is deck railing surface area estimated?

A railing has a top rail, a bottom rail, posts and balusters on both faces. Averaged across common 36-inch residential railing, that adds up to about 4 square feet of stainable surface for every linear foot of railing. This calculator multiplies your railing length by 4 to include it in the total area.

Does a second coat use as much stain as the first?

No. The first coat soaks into bare wood and is absorbed the most. Once the surface is sealed, each additional coat spreads roughly 60 percent further, so a second coat uses noticeably less stain than the first. This calculator applies that efficiency automatically.

How much stain does rough or weathered wood need?

Rough-sawn and old, weathered gray wood is far more porous than smooth new boards, so a gallon covers less area. Expect rough or textured wood to use around 30 to 40 percent more stain, and weathered wood around 20 percent more, than the same deck in smooth, freshly planed lumber.

What kind of stain lasts longest on a deck?

In general, the more pigment a stain has, the longer it lasts and the more it hides the grain. Transparent sealers show the most wood but need reapplying most often; semi-transparent balances protection and grain; semi-solid and solid stains last the longest and cover weathered or mismatched boards, but spread a little less per gallon.

Should I buy extra stain?

Buy to the next whole gallon and keep a little in reserve for touch-ups and for uneven, thirsty boards. This calculator already rounds up to whole cans and shows the leftover amount, so you can decide whether that reserve is enough or whether to add one more can.
