What Size Dehumidifier Do I Need?
Dehumidifier sizing comes down to two things: how large the space is and how damp it is. Bigger and wetter spaces need to pull more water out of the air each day, which means a higher pint rating. The industry standard for decades was the AHAM sizing chart, which this calculator fits to a continuous formula so it works for any room size rather than snapping to a fixed 500 sq ft grid.
Dehumidifier Sizing Formula
The base capacity is estimated from the floor area and the dampness level, then adjusted for ceiling height and any extra moisture sources.
The Base and Rate come from the dampness level (a moderately damp room uses 6 + 0.008 ร area; an extremely wet one uses 10 + 0.016 ร area). The ceiling factor scales the result for rooms taller than the standard 8 ft, and the 0.70 converts the old rating to the 2019 DOE rating that appears on units sold today.

Why Old and New Dehumidifiers Have Different Pint Ratings
In 2019 the US Department of Energy changed how dehumidifiers are tested. The test temperature was lowered from 80ยฐF to 65ยฐF, and because less moisture condenses out of cooler air, the measured pint capacity dropped by roughly 30%. Nothing about the machines changed โ only the number on the label. A dehumidifier that was marketed as 70-pint before 2019 is now sold as about 50-pint.
