About Asphalt Calculator

The Asphalt Calculator works out how many tons of hot mix asphalt (HMA) you need to pave a driveway, parking lot, path or road. Enter the area, the compacted thickness and the mix density, and the tool returns the tonnage to order, the equivalent cubic yards, the number of truckloads, and the total cost — alongside a to-scale pavement cross-section diagram and a full step-by-step breakdown. Because asphalt is produced and sold by weight, tonnage is the number that actually matters when you place an order.

How to Calculate Asphalt Tonnage

Asphalt tonnage comes from a simple volume-times-density calculation. Convert every dimension to feet, find the volume in cubic feet, multiply by the mix density, then divide by 2000 to turn pounds into US short tons.

Step 1 — Volume
$$\text{Volume (ft}^3) = \text{Area (ft}^2) \times \text{Thickness (ft)}$$
Step 2 — Tons
$$\text{Tons} = \frac{\text{Volume (ft}^3) \times \text{Density (lb/ft}^3)}{2000}$$

For standard dense-graded hot mix asphalt, the compacted density is about 145 lb/ft³ (roughly 2.3 t/m³). That single number is what lets you turn a thickness on the ground into a weight on the invoice.

The Handy "Square-Yard-Inch" Rule

Paving crews often skip the long math with a field shortcut: one square yard of hot mix asphalt, one inch thick, weighs about 110 lb (0.055 tons). Multiply your area in square yards by the thickness in inches, then by 110 lb, to get a quick pounds figure. This calculator shows the exact pounds-per-square-yard-inch for your chosen density so you can sanity-check any bid.

How Much Does 1 Ton of Asphalt Cover?

Coverage per ton depends on thickness — thicker pavement covers less ground per ton. At the standard 145 lb/ft³ density:

ThicknessCoverage per TonTypical Use
1 inch≈ 160 sq ftThin overlay / resurfacing
2 inches≈ 80 sq ftDriveway surface course
3 inches≈ 53 sq ftDriveway / light parking
4 inches≈ 40 sq ftParking lot / light commercial
6 inches≈ 27 sq ftHeavy-duty / road base + surface

Recommended Asphalt Thickness

ApplicationAsphalt ThicknessBase Thickness
Residential driveway2 – 3 in4 – 6 in aggregate
Parking lot (light)3 in6 in aggregate
Parking lot (heavy / trucks)4 in8 in aggregate
Private road4 – 6 in8 in+ aggregate
Overlay on sound pavement1.5 – 2 inexisting surface

Asphalt is only as good as what it sits on. A properly compacted aggregate base spreads the load and prevents cracking, which is why the cross-section diagram above shows the asphalt lift resting on base and subgrade layers.

Asphalt Mix Densities

🛣️ Dense-Graded HMA

The workhorse mix for driveways, lots and roads. Compacted density around 145–150 lb/ft³.

💧 Porous / Open-Graded

Lets water drain through. Lighter and more voids, around 130 lb/ft³.

♻️ Recycled (RAP / Millings)

Reclaimed asphalt reused for driveways and base. Around 120–130 lb/ft³.

🧪 Custom Mix

Enter a supplier-specified density in lb/ft³ or t/m³ for exact tonnage.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the paving area: Choose rectangle, circle or triangle and enter the dimensions in feet, yards, inches or metric units.
  2. Enter the asphalt thickness: Use the compacted thickness — typically 2–4 inches for driveways and lots.
  3. Choose the mix density: Pick a hot mix asphalt preset or enter a custom density from your supplier.
  4. Add options: Set a waste factor, price per ton and truck payload if you want cost and truckload planning.
  5. Click Calculate: Review the tonnage, cubic yards, truckloads, cost, the cross-section diagram and the step-by-step math.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate tons of asphalt?

Multiply the paving area by the compacted thickness to get the volume in cubic feet, multiply by the mix density (about 145 pounds per cubic foot for standard hot mix asphalt), then divide by 2000 to convert pounds to US short tons. In formula form: Tons = Area (sq ft) × Thickness (ft) × Density (lb/ft³) ÷ 2000.

How many tons of asphalt do I need for a driveway?

A typical two-car driveway of about 400 square feet paved 3 inches thick needs roughly 7 to 8 tons of hot mix asphalt. The exact amount depends on the area, thickness and mix density, so enter your own dimensions for an accurate figure.

How much does 1 ton of asphalt cover?

At a compacted density of about 145 pounds per cubic foot, one ton of hot mix asphalt covers roughly 80 square feet at 2 inches thick, about 53 square feet at 3 inches, or about 40 square feet at 4 inches. Thicker pavement covers less area per ton.

What is the density of hot mix asphalt?

Standard dense-graded hot mix asphalt has a compacted density of about 145 pounds per cubic foot, or roughly 2.3 tonnes per cubic meter. Open-graded and porous mixes are lighter at around 130 pounds per cubic foot, while recycled asphalt millings are lighter still.

How thick should asphalt be?

Residential driveways are usually paved 2 to 3 inches thick over a compacted aggregate base. Parking lots and light commercial areas typically use 3 to 4 inches, and roads that carry heavy traffic use thicker or multiple layers. Always place asphalt on a well-compacted base.

Why is asphalt ordered by the ton instead of by volume?

Hot mix asphalt is produced and priced by weight at the plant, and it must be delivered and laid while hot. Because density is consistent for a given mix, tonnage is the reliable ordering unit. This calculator converts your area and thickness to tons using the mix density.
