How to Calculate Baseboard and Trim
Estimating trim is a simple three-step process once you know the room perimeter:
For non-rectangular rooms, simply add up the length of every wall to get the perimeter and switch the calculator to perimeter mode. Doorway openings are subtracted for floor trim such as baseboard and shoe molding, but not for crown molding, which runs continuously around the ceiling.
Why a Waste Factor Matters
You will never install trim with zero waste. Every inside and outside corner is a 45ยฐ miter cut, and each cut removes material and leaves a short unusable offcut. A 10% waste factor is the standard recommendation for a typical room. Rooms with many corners, bay windows, or angled walls warrant 15%, and premium hardwood or patterned moldings โ where you may discard pieces to match grain or pattern โ can justify 15โ20%.

Common Trim Types
Runs along the floor where the wall meets it. Stops at doorways, so openings are subtracted.
Runs around the top of the wall at the ceiling. Continuous, so doorways are not subtracted.
A horizontal molding about a third of the way up the wall. Interrupted by door casings.
A thin molding at the base of the baseboard that hides floor gaps. Stops at doorways.
Standard Trim Board Lengths
Baseboard and molding are usually sold in fixed stock lengths. In the US these are commonly 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16 feet; in metric markets 2.4, 3.0, 3.6, 4.2, and 4.8 metres are typical. Longer boards mean fewer seams on long walls but are harder to transport. How do I calculate how much baseboard I need?
Measure the perimeter of the room by adding up the length of every wall, or use 2 ร (length + width) for a rectangular room. Subtract the width of each doorway, because baseboard stops at door openings. Then add a waste factor of about 10% for miter cuts and mistakes. The result is the linear feet of baseboard to buy.
How much waste should I add for baseboard and trim?
A waste factor of 10% is a good default for most rooms. Add 15% or more for rooms with many corners, angled walls, or if you are using an expensive hardwood or a patterned molding where grain matching matters. Simple rooms with long straight walls can use as little as 5%.
Do I subtract doorways for crown molding?
No. Crown molding runs continuously around the ceiling line, so doorways are not subtracted. Baseboard, shoe molding, and chair rail run along or up the wall and stop at door openings, so their door widths are subtracted from the perimeter.
How many boards of trim should I buy?
Divide the total linear feet needed (including waste) by the length of the boards you plan to buy, then round up to the next whole board. For example, 60 linear feet of trim using 16-foot boards needs 60 รท 16 = 3.75, which rounds up to 4 boards.
What is a standard doorway width?
Interior doorways are commonly about 3 feet (0.9 m) wide including the casing, though bedroom and bathroom doors can be 30 to 32 inches and closet or double doors wider. Measure your actual openings for the most accurate baseboard estimate.
Should I buy extra trim beyond the calculated amount?
The waste factor already builds in a cushion, but it is wise to buy at least one extra board of trim. It covers a miscut, gives you spare material for future repairs, and ensures every piece comes from the same batch and finish.
