This binaural beats generator builds a finished stereo track in your browser. Pick a beat frequency between 0.5 and 40 Hz from the Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta and Gamma presets, choose the carrier pitch, and optionally drop in your own MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG or FLAC so the beat rides under your own music, rain recording or guided meditation. Headphones, always. A binaural beat exists only because each ear receives a different tone. Speakers blend the two tones before they reach you and the beat vanishes. If headphones are not an option, switch Beat delivery to Monaural: both tones are mixed into both channels, so the pulse is created in the air and any speaker reproduces it.

What a Binaural Beat Actually Is

Play 197 Hz into the left ear and 203 Hz into the right and neither ear hears a 6 Hz sound — 6 Hz is far below the ~20 Hz limit of human hearing. Instead the brainstem compares the two signals and you perceive a slow pulsing at exactly the difference: 6 beats every second. Change the pair to 197 and 207 Hz and the pulse becomes 10 per second. The carrier pitch is what you hear; the difference is what you feel.

The presets follow the classic EEG bands. They are a starting point, not a prescription — pick the one that matches what you want to do, then trust your own ears.

Two Ways to Beat Your Own Music

Most generators only play pure tones. This one can also work on a file you supply, in two different ways:

🎚️ Tone layer (default)Your track plays exactly as recorded and a binaural tone pair sits underneath it at a level you set. Nothing about the music changes, so it is safe for anything — songs, podcasts, guided meditations.
🌀 Whole-mix shiftThe track itself becomes the beat. The left channel is shifted down by half the beat frequency and the right channel up by the same amount, so every sound in the mix beats at your chosen rate.

Why a Frequency Shift, Not a Pitch Shift

This is the part most tools get wrong. A pitch shift multiplies every frequency by the same ratio; a frequency shift adds the same number of hertz to every frequency. Only addition produces one single beat rate across the whole mix.

That is why the tool shows the detune in cents and splits the shift evenly between the two ears.
Whole-mix shift uses a single-sideband (Bode-style) shifter built from the analytic signal of the audio, so each side moves by an exact number of hertz.

Because the shift is additive it detunes the music a little, and the amount depends on pitch: 3 Hz is about 24 cents at 220 Hz but under 3 cents at 2 kHz. The tool splits the shift symmetrically — left down by half the beat, right up by half — so the average tuning of the track never moves, and it tells you the detune in cents before you render. Pads, drones, rain and ambience take the treatment beautifully; a solo piano recording at 20 Hz will not.

Choosing the Carrier Frequency

The carrier is the pitch you actually hear. Research on binaural beat perception (Licklider, 1950; Oster, 1973) found the effect is clearest with carriers in the low hundreds of hertz and fades away as the carrier climbs, which is what the sweet-spot meter in the tool reflects.

The beat difference matters too. Below about 30 Hz you hear a pulse; push past that and the two tones start to be heard as two separate rough tones instead. That is why a 40 Hz Gamma beat sounds noticeably different from a 6 Hz Theta beat, and why it works best on a carrier in the 200–300 Hz range.

Tips for a Track You Will Actually Listen To

  • Keep the tone layer quiet. Around 25–35% under music is enough; the beat works below conscious attention, and a loud hum is what makes people give up after five minutes.
  • Use a long fade in for sleep tracks — 20 to 60 seconds — so nothing jolts you as playback starts.
  • For Delta sleep sessions, a 100–200 Hz carrier with a pink-noise bed at 20–30% masks household noise better than tones alone.
  • For focus sessions, Beta around 14–18 Hz on a 250–300 Hz carrier stays present without becoming distracting. Instrumental music only; lyrics compete with the task.
  • Loop short source clips rather than rendering an hour: tick Loop, set the length you want, and keep the fades at 0 with Loop-safe ending on if you plan to repeat the file endlessly.
  • Listen at a comfortable, low volume. Louder does not make entrainment stronger, it just tires your ears.

Binaural beats are audio, not medicine.
