- Split into two teams. Each round, one player from the team is the actor.
- The actor secretly reads a prompt, then acts it out for their own team without speaking.
- The team shouts guesses until someone says the exact prompt or the timer runs out (one minute is standard).
- Each correct guess scores a point. Teams take turns, and the higher score after an agreed number of rounds wins.
Standard signals: fingers for the number of words and then for which word you are on, fingers on your forearm for syllables, a tug of the ear for "sounds like", cranking a film camera for a movie, opening your hands like a book for a book, and pretending to sing for a song.
Questions people ask
What are good charades ideas for kids?
Animals, simple actions and characters they can act with their whole body: a monkey, a kangaroo, brushing teeth, flying a kite, a superhero. Young children enjoy making animal noises, so relax the no-sound rule for them. The kids list is built that way.
What are the hand signals in charades?
Hold up fingers for the number of words, then fingers again for which word you are acting. Lay fingers on your forearm for syllables, tug your ear for sounds like, crank an old film camera for a movie, open your palms like a book for a book title, and pretend to sing for a song.
How do you play charades with adults?
Split into two teams, give each actor a secret prompt and a one-minute timer, and score a point for every correct guess. Adult groups enjoy prompts from everyday grown-up life, such as a job interview or parallel parking, which are funny to act without being rude. See the adults list.
Can you make sounds in charades?
In standard charades the actor stays silent: no words, lip-synced words or sound effects. Many families let young children make animal noises, and some groups allow sound effects in a final bonus round. Agree the rule before you start.
