How to Make a Round Robin Schedule

1. Choose the type. Everyone plays everyone, or doubles with a new partner every round.

3. Set courts and dates. The number of courts or fields, and optionally the first date, days between rounds and game times.
4. Make the schedule. Shuffle the draw if you want a different random order.

In a mixer, or “king of the court” social, players change partners every round instead of staying in fixed teams. Each round the generator fills every court with four players, chooses partners who have not played together yet and opponents they have met least, and rotates the sit-outs fairly when there are more players than places.

Short on time? Set fewer rounds: a two-hour session with 15-minute games is about 8 rounds, and nobody partners the same player twice until everyone has had a turn.

Tips for Running a Round Robin

• Count the time first. Rounds × time slots × minutes per game is the length of the day. The summary above the schedule shows the slots per round.
• Print the score boxes. The PDF has an empty box for every score and a blank standings sheet, ready for a clipboard.
• Agree the tie-break in advance. The table uses points, then score difference, then points scored.
• Too many teams for one day? Split them into two groups, play a round robin in each, then a final between the group winners.

How many games are in a round robin?

With n teams a single round robin has n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 games: 6 teams play 15 games, 8 teams play 28 and 10 teams play 45. A double round robin has twice as many. There are n − 1 rounds when n is even and n rounds when n is odd, because one team rests each round.

What happens with an odd number of teams?

Each round one team has a bye and sits out. The byes rotate, so in a single round robin every team rests exactly once and everyone still plays the same number of games.

How does the pickleball or tennis doubles mixer work?

Choose Doubles with rotating partners and list the players. Every round they are split into teams of two on each court, choosing pairs who have not partnered yet and opponents they have met least. With 8 players and 7 rounds, or 12 players and 11 rounds, everyone partners everyone else exactly once. When there are more players than court places, the sit-outs rotate so nobody sits twice before everyone has sat once.

How are home and away decided?

The schedule alternates home and away as evenly as the maths allows: with an odd number of teams nobody plays two home or two away games in a row, and with an even number only the unavoidable minimum of n − 2 back-to-back pairs is left in the whole season. In a double round robin the second half repeats the first with home and away swapped.

What if I have fewer courts than games?

Enter the number of courts or fields and each round is split into time slots: with 8 teams and 2 courts the 4 games of a round are played as two slots of two. Add a first game time and minutes per game to print the start time of every slot.

How is the standings table worked out?

A win gives 3 points and a draw 1. Teams level on points are split by score difference and then by points scored. In the doubles mixer every player is credited with their team's result, so the table ranks individual players.

Can I use it for chess, darts, esports or office tournaments?

Yes. Anything played all-play-all works the same way, from chess and pool clubs to darts nights, board game groups, esports leagues and school or office competitions. Rename courts to tables or boards and home and away become the two sides.
