About Chronological Age Calculator

This chronological age calculator gives a person’s exact age on any date in years, months and days, written the way test record forms want it: 7;3;12. Speech-language pathologists, school psychologists, occupational therapists and teachers use it to score standardized tests, and parents of premature babies use it for the corrected age. The borrowing is worked out and shown for you, and you can switch between the test-manual method and exact calendar days.

How to Use the Chronological Age Calculator

  1. Enter the date of birth. Type the month, day and year (the cursor moves on by itself), paste a date such as 3/14/2019, or use the calendar button. Change the date order at the top if you write dates as day/month/year.
  2. Check the test date. It starts as today. Enter the day the test was given if you are scoring it later.
  3. Set the options you need. Choose the test-manual or calendar method, round to months if your manual asks for it, or tick Born early and enter the gestational age for a corrected age.
  4. Copy the age as 7;3;12, 7-3-12, in words or in months, and save it to the history if you are testing several children.

How to Calculate Chronological Age by Hand

Write the test date above the date of birth, as year, month and day, and subtract from right to left. When the days do not go, borrow 1 month and count it as 30 days. When the months do not go, borrow 1 year as 12 months. Here is a child born on July 24, 2019 and tested on November 5, 2026:

YearMonthDay
Test date202611 → 105 → 35
Date of birth2019724
Chronological age7311

5 is less than 24, so 1 month is borrowed: 5 + 30 = 35 days and the month drops from 11 to 10. Then 35 − 24 = 11 days, 10 − 7 = 3 months and 2026 − 2019 = 7 years. The age is 7;3;11. Counting real calendar days instead gives 7;3;12, because October has 31 days; the calculator tells you whenever the two methods disagree.

Corrected Age for Premature Babies

A baby born before 37 weeks is usually assessed on their corrected (adjusted) age until about 2 years old, so they are compared with babies who had the same time to develop. Take the weeks born early away from the chronological age: a full-term pregnancy is 40 weeks, so a baby born at 30 weeks is 10 weeks early. Born on January 10, 2026 and seen on July 10, 2026, that baby is 6 months old but has a corrected age of 0;3;19, counted from the due date of March 21, 2026. Most tests stop correcting at 24 months, a few at 36 months; your test manual has the final word.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is chronological age?

Chronological age is the exact time a person has been alive on a given date, written in years, months and days. Standardized tests use it to choose the right norms, so a child’s chronological age on the test date decides which age band their scores are compared with.

How do you calculate chronological age for testing?

Write the test date above the date of birth as year, month and day, and subtract each column, starting with the days. If the test day is smaller, borrow 1 month as 30 days; if the test month is smaller, borrow 1 year as 12 months. For a child born on July 24, 2019 and tested on November 5, 2026: 5 + 30 − 24 = 11 days, 10 − 7 = 3 months, 2026 − 2019 = 7 years, so the chronological age is 7;3;11.

Why do some calculators give a different number of days?

Test record forms count a borrowed month as 30 days, while a calendar count uses the real length of each month. For July 24, 2019 to November 5, 2026 the test-manual method gives 7;3;11 and the calendar method gives 7;3;12, because October has 31 days. The calculator uses the test-manual method by default, shows a note when the two differ, and lets you switch under Options.

What does an age like 7;3;12 mean?

It is 7 years, 3 months and 12 days, written as years;months;days. Test manuals and speech-language reports use this short form, and some write it as 7-3-12. The calculator lets you copy the age in either form, in words, or as total months.

Should I round chronological age to the nearest month?

Only if your test manual says so. Many tests use the exact age and never round; others round up when the days reach 15 or 16. Under Options you can show the age rounded at 15 or 16 days next to the exact age.

How do I calculate corrected age for a premature baby?

Subtract the weeks born early from the chronological age. A full-term pregnancy is 40 weeks, so a baby born at 30 weeks was 10 weeks early. If that baby is 6 months old, the corrected age is about 3 months 19 days. Tick Born early, enter the gestational age at birth, and the calculator shows the corrected age in years, months and days.

Until what age should you correct for prematurity?

Most developmental tests correct for prematurity until 24 months of chronological age, and a few until 36 months. Babies born at 37 weeks or later are full term and need no correction. The calculator warns you when a child is past 24 months; follow the rule in your test manual.

Can I calculate ages for a whole class or caseload at once?

Yes. Open Class list, choose the test date and paste one person per line with their name and date of birth, straight from a spreadsheet if you like. Add the gestational age in weeks after the date for a premature baby. You get every age in a table you can copy, or download as a CSV file with a Pro plan.

Is the Chronological Age Calculator free and private?

Yes. Single ages and copying the class table are free with no sign-up. Everything is calculated in your browser, and names, dates and the saved history never leave your device.
