About Rugby Points Calculator
The Rugby Points Calculator adds up a rugby score the way the scoreboard does — from tries, conversions, penalty goals, and drop goals — for two teams at once. Switch between Rugby Union and Rugby League and every point value updates automatically, so you always get the right total for the code you are watching. It is ideal for fans following a live match, coaches checking a final score, students learning the rules, or anyone settling a "how many points is that?" debate.
How Rugby Scoring Works
There are four ways to put points on the board in rugby. Both Rugby Union and Rugby League use the same four actions, but they award different point values:
- Try — grounding the ball in the opponent's in-goal area. The biggest single score in the game.
- Conversion — a kick at goal taken straight after a try. Because it follows a try, a team can never have more conversions than tries.
- Penalty Goal — a successful kick at goal awarded from a penalty against the other team.
- Drop Goal — a kick at goal taken from open play by dropping the ball and kicking it on the half-volley. In Rugby League this is called a field goal (or one-pointer).
where \( T, C, P, D \) are the point values for the chosen code, shown in the tables below.
Rugby Union Scoring Values
| Scoring Action | Points | Symbol |
|---|---|---|
| 🏉 Try | 5 | T |
| 🎯 Conversion | 2 | C |
| 🥅 Penalty Goal | 3 | P |
| 🦶 Drop Goal | 3 | D |
A converted try in Rugby Union is therefore worth 7 points (5 for the try plus 2 for the conversion).
Rugby League Scoring Values
| Scoring Action | Points | Symbol |
|---|---|---|
| 🏉 Try | 4 | T |
| 🎯 Conversion (Goal) | 2 | C |
| 🥅 Penalty Goal | 2 | P |
| 🦶 Field Goal (Drop Goal) | 1 | D |
A converted try in Rugby League is worth 6 points (4 for the try plus 2 for the conversion).
Union vs League: Why the Scores Differ
Although the two codes look similar, their scoring evolved separately. Rugby Union rewards the try most heavily (5 points) and gives 3 points each for penalty goals and drop goals, which keeps the kicking game influential. Rugby League lowered the value of penalties to 2 and the field goal to just 1 point, deliberately encouraging teams to chase tries rather than kick for goal. The result is that the same set of actions produces a different total depending on which code you are scoring — which is exactly why this calculator lets you switch between them.
Worked Example
Suppose a Rugby Union team scores 3 tries, converts 2 of them, and kicks 4 penalty goals:
The same actions under Rugby League rules would total \( (3 \times 4) + (2 \times 2) + (4 \times 2) + 0 = 24 \) points — a clear illustration of how the code changes the final score.
How to Use This Calculator
- Choose the scoring system: Select Rugby Union or Rugby League. The live scoring key updates to show the points for each action.
- Name the teams (optional): Type each team's name so the scoreboard reads the way you want.
- Enter the scoring actions: For each team, enter the number of tries, conversions, penalty goals, and drop goals.
- Click Calculate: Read the head-to-head scoreboard, the winning margin, the per-team breakdown of where the points came from, and the step-by-step total.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many points is a try worth in rugby?
In Rugby Union a try is worth 5 points; in Rugby League it is worth 4 points. A try is scored when a player grounds the ball in the opposition in-goal area.
How many points is a conversion worth?
A conversion is worth 2 points in both Rugby Union and Rugby League. It is a kick at goal taken after a try, so a conversion can only be attempted once a try has been scored.
How many points is a penalty goal worth?
A penalty goal is worth 3 points in Rugby Union and 2 points in Rugby League. It is awarded for a successful kick at goal from a penalty against the opposing team.
How many points is a drop goal worth?
A drop goal is worth 3 points in Rugby Union. In Rugby League the equivalent kick is called a field goal (or one-pointer) and is worth 1 point.
What is the difference between Rugby Union and Rugby League scoring?
Both codes use tries, conversions, penalty goals, and drop goals, but the point values differ. Union awards Try 5, Conversion 2, Penalty 3, Drop Goal 3. League awards Try 4, Conversion 2, Penalty 2, Field Goal 1.
Can a team have more conversions than tries?
No. A conversion is a kick taken immediately after a try, so the number of successful conversions can never exceed the number of tries scored. If you enter more conversions than tries, the calculator flags it so you can re-check your numbers.
