How Many Acres in a Square Mile?

There are exactly 640 acres in one square mile. This equivalence follows from the definitions of the acre and the mile: 5,280 feet × 5,280 feet = 27,878,400 square feet, and 27,878,400 ÷ 43,560 = 640 acres. The PLSS later used 640-acre sections, which could be sold whole or divided into halves, quarters (160 acres), and quarter-quarters (40 acres).

Alternatively, you can divide the number of acres by 640 to get square miles:

Understanding the Acre

An acre is a unit of land area used primarily in the United States and United Kingdom. Originally, an acre was defined as the amount of land that could be plowed by a yoke of oxen in one day. Today, it is precisely defined as:

Understanding the Square Mile

A square mile is a large unit of area equal to one mile (5,280 feet) on each side. In the US Public Land Survey System, a square mile is also called a "section." Key facts:

• 640 acres per square mile (exact)
• 27,878,400 square feet per square mile
• 2.59 square kilometers (approximately)
• 259 hectares (approximately)

Why 640 Acres per Square Mile?

The number 640 comes from the mathematical relationship: A square mile contains 5,280 × 5,280 = 27,878,400 square feet. Dividing by 43,560 square feet per acre gives exactly 640 acres. This clean number made land division and sales easier during westward expansion.

Common Acres to Square Miles Conversions

Practical Applications

Real Estate and Property

Real estate professionals frequently convert between acres and square miles when dealing with large land parcels, ranches, or development projects. Understanding both units helps communicate property sizes to different audiences.

Agriculture and Farming

Farmers and agricultural professionals use acres for day-to-day operations but may need square miles when discussing county-wide statistics, large-scale farming operations, or comparing farmland across regions.

Land Management and Conservation

Wildlife managers, conservationists, and park services often work with both units. National parks and forests are typically measured in square miles, while specific management areas may use acres.

Urban Planning and Development

City planners use acres for zoning and lot sizes but square miles for city boundaries, district planning, and comparing urban areas.

Historical Context

The acre originated in medieval England as a practical unit based on the amount of land a yoke of oxen could plow in a day. The word "acre" comes from the Latin "ager" meaning field. When the United States established its land survey system, the acre was standardized and the 640-acre section became the fundamental unit for land distribution.

What is the formula to convert acres to square miles?

To convert acres to square miles, divide the number of acres by 640, or multiply by 0.0015625. The formula is: Square Miles = Acres × 0.0015625. For example, 320 acres equals 0.5 square miles (320 ÷ 640 = 0.5).

How big is 1 acre visually?

One acre is approximately 43,560 square feet, roughly the size of a football field without the end zones (which is about 1.32 acres including end zones). Visualize a square plot measuring about 208.7 feet on each side, or roughly 90% of a standard American football field.

Why are there 640 acres in a square mile?

The 640 acres per square mile standard comes from the US Public Land Survey System established in 1785. A square mile (section) contains 640 acres because it equals 5,280 feet × 5,280 feet = 27,878,400 square feet, and dividing by 43,560 square feet per acre gives exactly 640 acres.

What is the difference between an acre and a square mile?

An acre and a square mile are both units of area measurement, but they differ greatly in size. One square mile equals 640 acres, making it 640 times larger. A square mile is typically used for measuring large land areas like counties or forests, while acres are used for smaller properties like farms, parks, and residential lots.
