- Split into two teams. Each round, one player from the team is the drawer.
- The drawer secretly looks at a word. Everyone else looks away.
- When the timer starts, the drawer sketches and their team shouts guesses. No letters, numbers, talking or gestures.
- A correct guess before time runs out scores the word's points: 1 for easy, 2 for medium, 3 for hard, 4 for expert.
- Teams alternate. First team to an agreed score, or the higher score after a set number of rounds, wins.
Useful drawing signals: dashes for the number of words, a number of small lines above a dash for syllables, an arrow pointing at the important part of a sketch, and a cross over a wrong idea.
Questions people ask
What are good Pictionary words for kids?
Single objects and animals with a simple outline: sun, house, fish, snowman, balloon, rocket. Avoid ideas and actions, which even adults find hard to draw, and let a grown-up whisper the word to children who cannot read yet. The kids list sticks to these.
What makes a Pictionary word hard?
Hard words have no single obvious picture. Compound ideas (traffic jam, time machine), famous places, and abstract words such as gravity or freedom force the drawer to combine several sketches, which is why they score more points. Try the hard list.
How do you play Pictionary without the board game?
Split into two teams, take turns sending one drawer, and give them a secret word and a timer. Their team guesses from the drawing alone. A word list or a word generator replaces the cards, and paper or a phone sketch pad replaces the board.
What are the rules for drawing in Pictionary?
No letters, numbers or spoken clues, and no gestures. The drawer may use arrows, dashes for the number of words, and crossing out to show a guess is wrong. Guessers shout out answers until someone says the exact word or the time runs out.
