An earned run is any score that results directly from the pitcher's actions, like giving up base hits, walking batters, or throwing wild pitches. This is strictly separated from an unearned run. If an outfielder drops an easy fly ball, or an infielder makes a throwing error allowing a runner to score, that run is unearned. The calculator requires you to filter those out.
