The rule of 72 provides a quick mental estimate of your investment's doubling speed. By dividing 72 by your annual interest rate, you can see how quickly your money doubles.

The jump in yield from annually to quarterly is substantial, but increasing the frequency further, such as to daily or continuously, provides only marginal additional gains. The effective annual rate, or EAR, unmasks the true reality of your return.
It accounts for compounding frequency, showing that a 6% nominal rate compounded monthly actually yields a higher 6.17% true annual return. The mathematics of compounding possess no morality. The same forces that build generational wealth can destroy it when applied to credit card debt, where you pay interest on your interest.
