About Time Calculator

This time calculator adds and subtracts hours, minutes and seconds, finds the time between two clock times, and adds time to a date. Enter the times in fields or paste a whole list, such as race splits or video clip lengths, and the answer appears as you type, in hours, minutes and seconds, as h:mm:ss and in decimal hours. Night shifts that end the next morning, totals over 24 hours and negative results are all handled for you.

How to Use the Time Calculator

  1. Pick a tab. Add & subtract totals times, Time between finds how long it is from one time to another, and Date & time ± moves a date and time forwards or backwards.
  2. Enter the times. Type days, hours, minutes and seconds in the fields and choose + or − for each row, or choose Paste a list and enter one time per line, like 1:25:30, 25:47 or 1h 5m.
  3. Read the answer in hours, minutes and seconds, in clock format and in decimal hours. A list also shows the average, shortest and longest time.
  4. Copy or scale it. Copy the result, or multiply or divide it, for example to find the time for 8 laps or to split 3 hours between 4 people.

Minutes to Decimal Hours

Timesheets, invoices and payroll often want hours as a decimal. Divide the minutes by 60:

MinutesDecimal hoursMinutesDecimal hours
50.083350.583
60.1400.667
100.167450.75
150.25500.833
200.333540.9
300.5601

Going the other way, multiply the decimal part by 60: 2.6 hours is 2 hours and 0.6 × 60 = 36 minutes.

Adding and Subtracting Time by Hand

Time is counted in sixties, so you carry and borrow at 60 instead of 10. To add 1:25:30 + 2:50:45, add the seconds (75 = 1 minute 15 seconds, carry 1), then the minutes (25 + 50 + 1 = 76 = 1 hour 16 minutes, carry 1), then the hours (1 + 2 + 1 = 4): the answer is 4:16:15. To subtract 5:10 − 2:45, you cannot take 45 minutes from 10, so borrow 1 hour: 70 − 45 = 25 minutes and 4 − 2 = 2 hours, giving 2:25.

For the time between two clock times, subtract the start from the end. If the end is earlier than the start, as in a shift from 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM, add 24 hours: 6:30 − 22:00 + 24:00 = 8 hours 30 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add hours and minutes together?

Add the seconds, then the minutes, then the hours. Every 60 seconds becomes 1 minute and every 60 minutes becomes 1 hour. For example, 1:25:30 + 2:50:45: 30 + 45 = 75 seconds, which is 1 minute 15 seconds; 25 + 50 + 1 = 76 minutes, which is 1 hour 16 minutes; 1 + 2 + 1 = 4 hours. The answer is 4:16:15. The calculator does this for you, for as many times as you like.

How many hours are there between 9:45 AM and 2:20 PM?

4 hours 35 minutes, which is 4.58 hours in decimal. Open Time between, enter 9:45 AM as the start and 2:20 PM as the end, and the calculator shows the answer with its working.

How do I calculate time across midnight, like a night shift?

Enter the start and end times as usual. When the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator counts it as the next day, so 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM gives 8 hours 30 minutes, labeled Ends the next day. For more than one day, tick The times are on different days and pick the dates.

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, 30 minutes is 0.5 hours and 45 minutes is 0.75 hours, so 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours. Every result in the calculator also shows the decimal hours, ready for a timesheet or invoice.

How do I find the average of several times?

Choose Paste a list and enter one time per line, for example race splits 5:42, 5:38, 5:51, 5:35 and 5:29. The calculator shows the total (28:15), the average (5:39) and the shortest and longest times.

What time will it be in 3 hours and 45 minutes?

Open Date & time ±, press Now, choose Add and enter 3 hours and 45 minutes. The result shows the exact date and time, the day of the week and whether it falls on the next day.

Does adding days take daylight saving time into account?

Yes. Weeks and days are added as calendar days and keep the same clock time, so 9:00 AM plus 1 day is 9:00 AM the next day even across a daylight saving change. Hours, minutes and seconds are added as exact elapsed time, so on the night the clocks change the clock time can be one hour different from what simple arithmetic suggests.

Is the Time Calculator free?

Yes. It is free with no sign-up, and everything is calculated in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere.
