This video is a reference guide on valuing the future, specifically the present value interest factor of annuity, or PVIFA. PVIFA is a mechanism for calculating the present value of a future annuity. The core law of future capital is that money today holds more value than the identical amount tomorrow. This is due to the time value triad, opportunity cost, inflation, and risk.

PVIFA is the financial translator that answers the core question, What is the lump sum equivalent today of a series of future equal payments? It converts a stream of future cash flows into a single, precise present value. The PVIFA engine is defined by this formula. It is the multiplier used to calculate the total present value based on the interest rate per period and the number of periods.

In scenario alpha, we look at loan amortization. By calculating the PVIFA based on the loan's rate and periods, We find the exact monthly payment for a $50,000 car loan is $966.64. Scenario beta is retirement annuity valuation. Using the PVIFA formula, we calculate the present value of receiving $2,000 per month for 20 years at a 4% discount rate.

The lump sum value today is $330,040. PVIFA has a wide spectrum of application in both personal and corporate finance. This includes loan amortization, pension valuation, lease valuation, bond pricing, and capital budgeting. PVIFA and FVIFA, the future value interest factor of annuity, are directional opposites.

PVIFA uses discounting to pull future payments back to today. FVIFA uses compounding to push present payments forward. The limit of time for PVIFA is perpetuity. As periods approach infinity, PVIFA hits a strict mathematical ceiling, which is calculated as 1 divided by the interest rate, or 1 slash r.

This PVIFA factor reference matrix shows values derived from the PVIFA formula. Note that higher periods and lower rates yield the highest present value multipliers.
