The Track Day Lap Time Consistency Calculator takes a whole session of lap times and tells you the thing a single fastest lap never will: how repeatable your driving actually was. Paste the laps, and it returns a consistency score out of 100, the standard deviation and coefficient of variation of your clean laps, the number of seconds you gave away to scatter, and a lap-by-lap chart with the out-lap, the in-lap and the traffic laps already identified and set aside.
What Lap Time Consistency Actually Measures
Consistency is the spread of your lap times, and the standard deviation is the standard way to state it. It answers a specific question: if you did one more lap right now, how far from your average would it probably land?
The sample form with \( n-1 \) in the denominator is used rather than the population form, because a track session is a sample of your driving on that day, not the complete set of every lap you will ever do. With ten or twelve laps the difference is around five percent of the answer, which is enough to matter when you are comparing two sessions.
Why the coefficient of variation, not just the standard deviation
Four tenths of a second of scatter means something completely different on a 40 second kart lap than it does on a four minute Nordschleife lap. Dividing the standard deviation by the average lap removes the length of the lap and leaves a pure, comparable consistency figure — the coefficient of variation, quoted here as a percentage of a lap.
This is what makes a consistency number portable. A 0.6 CV at a kart track and a 0.6 CV at Spa describe the same quality of driving, and your own figure from last month is comparable with today's even though the circuit, the car and the lap length have all changed.
The Consistency Score
The score is a plain reading of your coefficient of variation on a 0 to 100 scale, interpolated between the anchor points below. It is a scale rather than a formula so that every point on it can be justified on its own terms.

The band names describe the driving in that session, not the driver. An instructor stuck behind a slower car for half a session scores like a novice, which is exactly why the tool flags traffic laps separately instead of quietly folding them into the average.
The Part Most Lap Time Calculators Get Wrong
Run a plain standard deviation over a raw session export and the answer is almost always wrong, because the export contains laps that are not attempts at a lap time. The first lap starts from pit lane on cold tyres and cold brakes. The last lap often ends with a lift for the pit entry. And somewhere in the middle there is usually a lap spent behind a slower car, or one where you ran wide and had to gather it up.
Those three kinds of lap are not measurements of your consistency — they are events. Left in, they can double the standard deviation of an otherwise tidy session and drag the score down by twenty points or more.
Why the median and MAD instead of the mean and sigma
The obvious way to find the bad laps is to flag anything more than two standard deviations from the mean. It does not work, because both the mean and the standard deviation are themselves destroyed by the laps you are trying to find. One four minute traffic lap in an eighty second session inflates sigma so far that every other bad lap now sits comfortably inside two of them.
So this calculator uses two robust statistics instead. The median is the middle lap, and moving one lap to four minutes barely moves it. The median absolute deviation is the median of how far each lap sits from that median lap, scaled by 1.4826 so that it estimates the same quantity a standard deviation would on well-behaved data.
A lap further than about three and a half of those from the median gets flagged. The filter also refuses to eat the session: if applying it would leave fewer than three laps, it is dropped entirely, because at that point the spread is the session rather than a handful of anomalies, and removing laps would only manufacture a flattering score from whichever three happened to agree.
How to Use This Calculator
- Paste your lap times. Paste the whole session into the lap times box. One lap per line is easiest, but comma separated, space separated and lap-timer CSV exports all work, and times can be written as 1:23.456 or as 83.456 seconds.
- Choose which laps to exclude. Leave Exclude the out-lap ticked for a normal session, and tick Exclude the in-lap as well if you slowed down on the last lap coming into the pits.
- Set the traffic filter. Leave the traffic and mistake filter on Normal to drop laps that sit more than three and a half robust standard deviations from the median, or set it to Off to score every lap exactly as driven.

- Read the lap table. Work down the lap-by-lap table to see which laps were counted, which were flagged as traffic, and how many seconds the session gave away compared with repeating your best lap.
Reading the Session Shape
Two sessions can share a consistency score and describe completely different problems, which is why the tool also reports the shape of the session rather than just its spread.
What Consistency Is Actually Worth in Lap Time
Tightening your spread does not make your fastest lap faster. It pulls your average lap toward the fastest one, and that is where the time is. If your best lap is a 1:22.8 and you average 1:23.4, then over a twenty lap session you are handing back twelve seconds relative to a driver who simply repeats what you already proved you can do.
This is why coaches almost always work on consistency before outright pace. A repeatable lap means fixed braking points and fixed turn-in references, and those are the platform every later tenth is built on. A driver chasing the fastest lap first typically just adds scatter: more laps go wrong, the average gets worse, and the one good lap tells them nothing they can reproduce.
